We typically associate the wishbones with the Thanksgiving tradition of breaking the V-shaped bone from a turkey, chicken or duck followed by making a wish. But have you ever wondered about its origins? Allow us to fill you in.
The wishbone-breaking tradition is as old as 700 BCE and can be traced back to the Etruscans, an ancient Italian civilization that considered birds to be oracles that could predict people’s future. It was a custom to slaughter a chicken, harvest its bone and then set it out in the sun to dry to preserve its divine powers. Those passing by would hold the bone in their hands and softly stroke it while making wishes upon it, which is why we call it (ta-da!) the wishbone.
